Probably your biggest question about becoming vegan is “Why”. Well, you’re not the first nor will you be the last to ask that question. I have read a few books, watched a few videos and talked to different people and they seem to be turning to the vegan lifestyle for many different reasons. But trust me, my reason is not a trend that some strung out celebrity is on this week or this year.
The more I read about veganism the more reasons I find to change.
1. My first and most convicting reason was to lessen my intake of cancer-causing chemicals. The stakes are high enough without me contributing to it by what I am putting into my body.
2. The second is the animals that are sorely mistreated just to feed us.
3. Third is the information that I recently came across about how much of US produced crop goes just to feeding the animals that we in the west consume. 70%!!!! This hit me like a ton of bricks. Honestly, I have never been a big advocate for world hunger. Yes, I would like it to end but I didn’t really think that it would go away and didn’t think that I, as one individual could really make a difference. 33,000 children die every day from hunger. Why are we not using a percentage of the crops to cut this number down instead of feeding our cravings for meat?! If we are the generous, caring (dare I say, Christian?) people that some of us say we are, why aren’t we doing our small part to help change this???
As a Christian myself, I didn’t feel right about sitting back and doing nothing. God gave us His creations as gifts that we are charged with taking care of; this beautiful earth, all His creatures and our bodies, made in His image. We have done a piss poor job so far.
Maybe my contribution will be small but it will me mine and I will have done all that I could.
